Been a long time since we posted a mix sent in by one of y’all. Which isn’t intentional…for awhile there we weren’t posting mixes of any kind.
But now that we’re back, and in full(ish) effect, we’ve been sifting through all of the mixes you’ve sent us for something that really blew our wigs back. Enter DAU AL SET of Iceland, who hit us with an ingenious mix of FUNK MUSIC, covered by contemporary artists.
We were skeptical at first. I mean, funk is one of those things that can’t be improved upon. It’s like the jelly donut, or the Mona Lisa or Nicholas Cage’s hair…you just cannot improve on perfection. And although the songs in this mix doesn’t improve on funk, it takes it to a sublime place, where it builds a coccoon and gracefully emerges as something else altogether. Not bad for a bunch of cover songs.

When I was working at the RECORD STORE back in the day we had this policy that we couldn’t hold records for customers longer than three days. That was it, we’d had enough carrying your crap you ain’t gonna buy. We didn’t bend the rule for anyone.
Well, except for DAM. That fool would have us hold like 8 records and we always them held until he came back. It might take a couple weeks but Dam always came back for those records, knew exactly what he had and how many. The man loves to dig. REALLY LOVES TO DIG. And that earns you rep in the record store.
It makes me feel like all is right in the world seeing Dam come up right now. The machine doesn’t always allow for good cats to get theirs. But on top of doing what he loves and in a way that no one else is doing he is also the coolest motherfucker you will meet.

Before he blew our minds with his first album, last album and subsequent mixes in between, RJD2 was putting down nasty mixtapes like this one. Behold his mastery of the dusty funk break and even catch a glimpse of some of the mash-ups that seemed to have inspired his some of his compositions on DEADRINGER.

Homie puts out more music than the BMG, Capitol Records and Sony Music combined. And how he does it through a perma-haze of sweet and savory blunt smoke is beyond me, but there it is: uplifting music from the soul, one after the other.
This is a mix he did for TIME OUT MAGAZINE as part of their Other Side series, which explores different cities around the world through its music. Well, with LA being LA and Madlib being Madlib, this is what you would expect from one of the more diverse cities in the world explored by one of the most diverse producers in the world: a fuzzed out trip through eclecticity in a way that only the WEST COAST can do it.
Sweet, savory, uplifting soul music…one after the other. Dig?
